Trio En

Rapidly emerging chamber group, Trio En, formed at the Butler School of Music in the summer of 2019.

The group members consist of Nick Hammel (violin), Chan Song An (cello), and Sohee Kwon (piano).

The three members come from a variety of musical education backgrounds, including institutions like Manhattan School of Music, Rutgers Universtiy, Eastman School of Music, Rice University, and the Butler School of Music.

The group has studied under coaches Daniel Ching, Andrew Brownell, and Sandy Yamamoto, and has received master classes from Bion Tsang, Gregory Allen, and Gregory Beaver.

Trio En has won first prize at the 2020 MTNA Chamber Music Competition, and were semifinalists in the 2020 Coltman Chamber Music Competition.

Trio En has also been featured on KMFA’s “From the Butler School” hosted by Dr. Ryan Kelly.

Most recently, the group won the Silver Medal of the Senior String Devision at the 2020 Fischoff National Chamber competition in USA.

They are an active chamber group and more events and performances to be announced soon.

Nick Hammel, violinist

Violinist Nick Hammel is currently a junior at The University of Texas where he studies under Sandy Yamamoto for Violin Performance. He has soloed with orchestras such as the Central Texas Medical Orchestra and the University of Texas University Orchestra, and has plans to solo with the Austin Civic Orchestra and the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra. Nick has also served as concertmaster of the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra and as assistant concertmaster of the 2018 Texas All-State Symphony Orchestra. Nick was also a semi-finalist in the 2018 Young Texas Artists Music Competition.   

 

Nick is also an active chamber music performer, and has performed with artists such as Sandy Yamamoto, Bion Tsang, Andrew Brownell, and Anton Nel. His current group, Trio En, formed in the summer of 2019, recently won Silver Medal in the Senior Strings Division of the 2020 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. They have also placed first in the 2020 MTNA Chamber Music Competition, and were semifinalists in the 2020 Coltman Chamber Music Competition.

Chan Song "Christina" An, Cellist

Growing up in a music family, An started her musical journey at the age of seven and continues her study in New Zealand from 2002, studying under Ashley Brown and James Tenant. During her education in New Zealand, she actively appeared in chamber ensembles at University of Auckland Chamber program. Her piano trio group won numerous awards and made it to the semi-final round at NZCT Chamber Music Competition as the youngest group that year. After moving to the United States in 2007, she continuously performed with many chamber groups in Eastman School of Music and Butler School of Music. Chan Song was the winner of concerto competitions at Colburn Preparatory School and Eastman School of music, performing with the orchestra.

Highlight of her chamber music activity 2019-20 includes her trio, Trio En winning the first prize at the 2020 MTNA Chamber Music Performance Competition as well as Silver Medal of the Senior String Division at the 2020 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Also, her other chamber group, her String Quartet Group, Favola Quartet won Grand Prize and First Prize at the 7th Coltman Chamber Music Competition.

Christina An studied with Dr. Richard Naill at the Colburn Preparatory School, Steven Doane at Eastman School of Music for her Undergraduate, Master of Music, and Performance Certificate, and Bion Tsang at Butler School of Music where she is currently pursuing her doctorate degree. She plays on a French cello, E. Simoutre Et Fils 1880's sponsored by Virtu Foundation.

Sohee Kwon, Pianist

A native of Seoul, Korea, Sohee Kwon has been rapidly advancing her career throughout the U.S.A including winning the third prize of Ruth Barr piano competition as well as appearing as one of semifinalists in both Wideman International Piano Competition and Ann & Charles Eisemann Young Artist Competition. 

 

As an avid chamber musician, Trio En, her piano trio group, recently won the silver medal in 2020 Fischoff National Chamber Competition and won the top prize in 2020 MTNA Chamber National Competition. Sohee appeared as a member of the piano quintet in residence at Lincoln Center Stage in 2017-8. 

 

Sohee Kwon appeared in many music festivals including Sarasota Music festivals and International Keyboard Institute and Festivals as a scholarship recipient. Also, she performed in major concert halls including Carnegie hall and participated in Masterclasses with world-renowned musicians such as Robert Levin, Klaus Hellwig, Pascal Godart, Alexander Kobrin,  Massimiliano Ferrati.

 

She has studied with Jin Son Kim, Daniel Epstein at Manhattan School of Music and Rutgers, Min Kwon at Rutgers, Jon Kimura Parker at Rice and Andrew Brownell at University of Texas at Austin. Currently, she is pursuing her Doctorate of Music of Arts at University of Texas under the tutelage of Pf. Andrew Brownell.
